International Film Critics Question Jacklyn Jose's Best Actress Award At 69th Cannes Festival

It looks like not everyone is happy with Jacklyn Jose's bigtime achievement at the recently concluded 69th Cannes Film Festival in France.

According to an article by Indie Wire, several critics disagreed with the Filipina actress’ win since they felt that her character in “Ma’ Rosa” was just a supporting role.

But the festival's jury members were quick to refute this and defended their decision to name Jacklyn as this year’s best actress winner for her performance in the Brillante Mendoza film “Ma’ Rosa.”

But jury member, veteran Hollywood actor Donald Sutherland, was quick to refute this.

The critics were wrong. It's a big-time leading role,” jury member and veteran Hollywood actor Donald Sutherland said.

This was echoed by fellow jury member Arnaud Desplechin, who said Jose “is the film” and "she broke my heart."

Aside from Sutherland and Desplechin, the other members of the jury were George Miller, Kirsten Dunst, Valeria Golino, Mads Mikkelsen, Laszuo Nemes, Vanessa Paradis and Katayoon Shahabi.

Among those she was up against were Hollywood stars Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart and French actresses Isabelle Hupert and Marion Cotillard.

During the photo call of the movie “Ma’ Rosa,” the veteran actress told ABS-CBN News that she was not expecting to win since it was already a dream come true to be back in Cannes with her daughter, actress Andi Eigenmann, who also plays her daughter in the movie.

"I dreamt of this, that someday I'm coming back with my daughter…Hindi pa siya artista noon,” she said. - ABS-CBNNews
