Photo shows ‘VP Leni socks’ went viral

“Epal sucks.” That is what critics of Robredo said when she gave away hundreds of socks at her oath taking as the 14th Vice President of the Philippines today, June 30, at the Quezon City Reception House. The event was administered by Barangay Chairmen Ronaldo Coner of Punta Tarawal, Calabangga, Camarines Sur, and Regina Celeste of Barangay Mariana, Quezon City.

Later, her supporters gathered at the QC Circle for the thanksgiving concert with singers Darren Espanto, Erik Santos, Sam Concepcion and Tippy Dos Santos providing the entertainment.

In a status post on Twitter, Inquirer.net multimedia reporter Julliane de Jesus announced that the first 600 supporters to arrive at QC Circle thanksgiving party will receive free VP Leni socks.

The photo was quickly circulated on social media sites Thursday night.

The Lapu-Lapu Facebook page described Robredo as “first day epal,” a Filipino slang which means “attention grabber” or politicians who use public funds to promote themselves, and the alleged distribution of socks as early “vote-buying.”

The page also likened Robredo to her predecessor, Jejomar Binay, who earned flak for distributing school bags with his name and the logo of the Office of the Vice President printed on it.

Some netizens also compared her to President Rodrigo Duterte who did not put his name on projects during his terms as Davao City Mayor.
